The "I can't... yet" club is a club you can't join. At least not in the traditional sense. There are no monthly meetings, no annual fees and no secret handshakes. The "I can't... yet" club is really just an mind-shift. It's a way to declare to yourself that you are done thinking small and to ask the important question, "why not me?"
THE CLUB IS BUILT AROUND THREE CORE PRINCIPALS
THE CLUB IS BUILT AROUND THREE CORE PRINCIPALS
- The CURIOSITY to wonder
- The AUDACITY to believe
- The TENACITY to see it through

How did this all start?
Several years ago, gymnastics gym owner and occasional runner, Mark Gibson got it into his head that he wanted to try and run 100 miles. He'd done a few outrageous challenges before [check out his bio] but this was going to be the toughest yet. He decided that, beyond the obvious physical training, he need to develop a mental game plan that would help him accomplish three things
- Effectively focus his time, talents and resources on the few things that would have the greatest impact and at the same time shake off all unproductive distractions.
- Reengineer his limiting self-image that kept him too firmly attached to his past successes and instead develop the courage to jump into the scary deep end of an unfamiliar pool of opportunity.
- Develop the resolve to be tougher than the challenges, setbacks, fears and frustrations that are an inevitable consequence of striving for outrageous goals.
What he came up with was The "I can't... yet" club and The CAT Game Plan.
You become a member of the "I can't... yet" club when you execute the three parts of the CAT Game Plan
I. Take on a … C.A.T. Quest (any challenge that you can’t do… YET!) II. With a … C.A.T. Mindset (the mental toolbox you’ll need to get you where you want to be next) III. Using a … C.A.T. Strategy (the "no excuses" framework that makes hard things simple, not easy… just simple) |
Let's break down the basics of a CAT Quest, the CAT Mindset and the CAT Strategy.
What is a CAT Quest? (Curiosity... Audacity...Tenacity)
Obsessive... CURIOSITY
The key to self-motivation and personal drive. Don't waste your limited energy, resources and willpower on things that don't fascinate you. Unwavering... AUDACITY The essential arrogance of an “I can’t... YET!” attitude. If you wait until you know you can succeed you'll never do anything. You must act on a belief with no guarantee of success. Focused... TENACITY The attitude of perseverance. Fear, setbacks, critics; these things are just life's way of testing you to see if you are serious about your goals. |
What is a C.A.T. Mindset?
I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY OWN MOTIVATION"
If you are not driven by your own inner curiosity then extrinsic motivation (bribes, threats, coercion) becomes the default (and highly ineffective) substitute.
Ask yourself the winner's question: "How hard do I work when no one is watching?"
The C.A.T. Mindset solution - BE SELF-MOTIVATED
"I DO NOT AVOID FEAR; I EMBRACE IT"
Fear is not a weakness to be avoided. It is your best indicator that you are outgrowing your old limits. Learn to use the energy of fear. Remember; courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to overcome fear.
There are only two kinds of truly fearless people; the lazy and the stupid. Either you are so lazy that you never push yourself into unfamiliar situations or, in situations where you should be scared, you are too stupid to realize it.
The C.A.T. Mindset solution - BE COURAGEOUS, NOT FEARLESS (without fear)
"I WILL NOT BECOME A SLAVE TO THE DRUDGERY OF SELF-DISCIPLINE"
Self-discipline is, at best, a temporary bridge to break old bad habits until you engage the winning habits that put your productivity on automatic. The fact that you still need self-discipline to get important things done is a great indicator that you are still too attached to the familiar comforts of old habits. The constant need for never ending self-discipline drains your energy and willpower.
Self-discipline is like the starting motor on a car. Once it gets the engine turned over it shuts off. If it ran constantly it would quickly burn out. This is why most people quit too soon.
The C.A.T. Mindset solution - DEVELOP WINNING HABITS (ASAP)
"I WILL NOT FALL FOR THE 'You can be, have, do anything you want' LIE"
Thinking you can be, have, do anything you want is a lie. It scatters your resources and prevents you from fully discovering and embracing your own unique talents and opportunities. Most of the time success is not about what you get, it's about what you are willing to give up.
Fish are smart enough to focus on swimming and leave the tree climbing to the monkeys. Are you as smart as a fish?
The C.A.T. Mindset solution - BE FOCUSED NOT SCATTERED
"I WILL NOT BE RESTRAINED BY THE INSECURE NEED FOR GUARANTEES"
Winners have the ability to act on the belief that they can succeed. Belief does not mean that you know you can succeed. Belief is the ability to commit to action without a guarantee of success. In fact, if you know you can succeed then you are clearly thinking too small. How do you develop a belief in yourself? You earn it! If you haven't done the hard work to deserve your self-confidence then you are not working with belief, you are working with delusion. And good luck with that.
People don't try to climb Mt. Everest because they know they can get to the top. They climb because they believe they can get to the top. If climbing Mt. Everest was so easy that success could be guaranteed then no one would want to climb it.
The C.A.T. Mindset solution - DO THE HARD WORK TO EARN THE RIGHT TO BELIEVE YOU CAN SUCCEED
"I WILL LEARN TO BE COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE"
If you are not willing to learn, be vulnerable and fail (frequently) you are playing it too safe and working way inside your potential. The habit of clinging to the false security of familiar past success is the catalyst of stagnation. What you can do may have got you where you are now but it's what you can't do... YET that'll get you where you need to be next.
Being comfortable should make you very uncomfortable.
The C.A.T. Mindset solution - PUT YOUR EGO ON HOLD AND BE AN EAGER ROOKIE
"I WILL NOT FALL INTO THE PASSION TRAP"
Don’t put off taking action because you lack passion. No one starts with passion. Run with what intrigues you, scares you, grabs your attention and won't let go. Then, over time, let your passion slowly develop as your self-image slowly shifts to embrace new worlds.
Passion at first sight is like love at first site. Mostly the stuff of fairy tales.
The C.A.T. Mindset solution - BE A SEEKER OF THE ODD, FRUSTRATING, AND SCARY CURIOSITIES THAT DRAW YOU IN

What is a C.A.T. Strategy?
There are Five Simple Steps to the C.A.T. Strategy
#1 Choose Your C.A.T. Quest
What Curiosity can you Audaciously explore with Tenacity? #2 Identify Your Obstacles Figure out why you can’t do this right now #3 Lay Out Your Stepping Stones Create a plan to overcome the obstacles #4 Quit or Commit Question Ask yourself “is executing this plan it worth it?” Is the payoff going to be worth the price? #5 Take Action (or don’t) If it's worth it then start doing whatever it takes. If it's not then let it go and choose another quest |
